This undoes the automerger skip which occured in
commit e740c84dc3 and
replays it as a standard (NOT -s ours) merge.

Fixed a reported typo (see bug), and while I had the file open, fixed
a few other typos and formatting problems.
I'll go ahead and build and stage this (see first comment for stage
location) to make sure I didn't break anything, but if it looks okay
I'll +2 it myself and submit it.

Per IRogers@ , you check the VM version by calling
System.getProperty("java.vm.version") -- not, as previously
documented, "dalvik.vm.version" (Ian says there's no such property as
dalvik.vm.version.) BDC@ and/or AnwarG@, can you confirm?

into the new courses for best practices.

The documentation is now consistent with the current UI guidelines
for handling notifications, and includes complete sample code showing
the correct way to do this.
